Odds measured from around 5,400 publicly opened English packs, the largest single count being TCGplayer’s 4,000+ pack dataset (21 Jul 2026). The darker bar is the low end of the range and the lighter bar runs to the high end. Odds for a single card assume every card of its rarity is equally likely.

How the Pitch Black odds work
The table above gives the chance of each rarity per pack and in whichever product you pick. Ultra Rares land about once every 12 packs and Illustration Rares about once in 9 to 11, so a Booster Box turns up a few of each. A Special Illustration Rare is the slower hit, around one in every 80 to 125 packs, and because six cards share that rate, the Mega Darkrai ex Special Illustration Rare on its own is roughly a 1 in 480 to 750 pull.
The gold Mega Hyper Rare is the one figure still shown as an estimate: English openings have turned up too few of them to measure the rate tightly, so the table carries a conservative number rather than a precise one. Every other rarity is measured from publicly opened English packs, most of them in TCGplayer's sample of more than 4,000.
Why Mega Darkrai leads Pitch Black
Darkrai's Pokédex category is the Pitch-Black Pokémon, which is where the set takes its name, and Mega Darkrai ex is its mascot. It has two premium prints: the Special Illustration Rare (#116), illustrated by Akira Egawa, and the gold Mega Hyper Rare (#120). Unusually, the Special Illustration Rare has traded above the rarer gold card since release; the ranking above shows the current order.
Only three of the six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex got a Special Illustration Rare: Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zeraora ex and Mega Chandelure ex. Mega Excadrill ex stops at Ultra Rare, and Mega Slowbro ex and Mega Delphox ex appear only as Double Rares. The other three SIRs go to Morpeko ex and two Supporters, Gwynn and Gladion's Final Battle.
Pitch Black products and what each holds
- Booster Box: 36 packs of 10 cards and nothing else, the most packs in one product.
- Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box: 11 packs, two full-art Zarude promos (one carries the Pokémon Center stamp and comes only in this box), 65 Mega Darkrai sleeves, 40 Energy, six damage-counter dice and a coin-flip die, a plastic Mega Darkrai coin, the player's guide and a collector's box with six dividers.
- Elite Trainer Box: 9 packs and one full-art Zarude promo, with 65 sleeves, 40 Energy, dice, a coin, the player's guide and a storage box.
- Booster Bundle: 6 packs.
- Build & Battle Box: 4 packs and a 40-card deck, sold early at prerelease events from 4 July.
- Checklane Blisters: 1 pack with a promo and a coin.
The choice is pack count against extras; our bundle or box guide weighs that up. Browse the Pitch Black range, see where UK collectors are buying in our Pitch Black UK guide, or join the drop alerts for Pokémon Center restocks.
The Pitch Black ETB player's guide
Both Elite Trainer Boxes, the retail one and the Pokémon Center one, include the player's guide, a printed booklet for the expansion. It does not come in the Booster Box, the Booster Bundle or the blisters; among the Pitch Black products, only the Elite Trainer Boxes include it.
Where Pitch Black comes from
Pitch Black (ME05, set code PBL) is built on Japan's Abyss Eye, released on 22 May 2026, plus three cards first given out in Japanese gym promo packs: Mega Slowbro ex, Mega Delphox ex and Jett. Mega Darkrai itself arrived in Mega Dimension, the add-on for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Prerelease events ran from 4 to 12 July, and it reached shops on 17 July, two months after Chaos Rising. Our Mega Evolution sets ranked guide shows where it sits in the era, and the next main expansion, Delta Reign, follows on 6 November.
Pitch Black questions
Does Pitch Black have good pull rates?
For Ultra Rares and Illustration Rares, yes: about one every 12 packs and one every 9 to 11. The Special Illustration Rare slot is slower, at one in roughly 80 to 125 packs, and the table above turns those rates into odds for a bundle, an Elite Trainer Box or a Booster Box.
What is the rarest card in Pitch Black?
The gold Mega Darkrai ex, #120, the only Mega Hyper Rare in the set. It is a harder pull than the Mega Darkrai ex Special Illustration Rare, even though the SIR has sold for more.
What are the chase cards in Pitch Black?
Mega Darkrai ex in its Special Illustration Rare and gold forms leads, and the other chase cards are the Morpeko ex, Mega Zeraora ex and Mega Chandelure ex SIRs and the two Supporter SIRs. The ranking above sorts them by today's value, with the odds of each.
What comes in the Pokémon Center Pitch Black ETB?
Eleven booster packs, two full-art Zarude promos (the one with the Pokémon Center stamp is exclusive to this box), 65 Mega Darkrai sleeves, 40 Energy cards, six damage-counter dice and a coin-flip die, a plastic coin, the player's guide booklet and a collector's box with six dividers.
How many packs are in a Pitch Black ETB?
Nine in the retail Elite Trainer Box and eleven in the Pokémon Center one. At ten cards a pack that is 90 or 110 cards before the promos.
How many cards are in Pitch Black?
120. The main set runs to 84 cards and the 36 secret rares are numbered 085 to 120, from the Illustration Rares up to the gold Mega Darkrai ex.
When did Pitch Black come out?
17 July 2026 in English, after prerelease events from 4 July. Japan had most of the same cards first, as Abyss Eye, on 22 May 2026.
