What makes Phantasmal Flames different
Phantasmal Flames followed Mega Evolution as the series' second main expansion. Most of its cards come from the Japanese set Inferno X, released on 26 September 2025, with more drawn from two Japanese starter sets built around Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex. The numbered set runs to 94 cards, and 36 secret rares sit beyond it.
Mega Charizard X ex is the face of the set and the card most collectors open it for. It appears four times: as a Double Rare (#13), as an Ultra Rare (#109), as a Special Illustration Rare (#125) and as the gold Mega Hyper Rare (#130). Mega Heracross ex, Mega Sharpedo ex and Mega Lopunny ex join it among the Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, each worth three Prize cards to your opponent when Knocked Out. Our Phantasmal Flames booster box review looks at what a sealed box of this set tends to deliver.
One gold card, not two
Where Mega Evolution split its Mega Hyper Rares between two Pokémon, Phantasmal Flames has only one: Mega Charizard X ex, card #130. Because nothing else shares that rarity, the odds of the rarity and the odds of the card are the same, about one pack in 1,260. Five Special Illustration Rares sit below it, numbered 125 to 129: Mega Charizard X ex, Rotom ex, Mega Sharpedo ex, Mega Lopunny ex and the Supporter Dawn.
Reading the Phantasmal Flames odds
The rates above come from TCGplayer's Phantasmal Flames dataset of more than 5,000 opened packs, checked against community trackers. An Illustration Rare lands about once in nine packs and an Ultra Rare about once in 12. Special Illustration Rares are the long wait at about one pack in 80, which puts any one named SIR, Mega Charizard X ex included, near one pack in 400. Over a 36-pack Booster Box that works out to a little better than a one in three chance of opening at least one SIR of any kind.
