Odds from TCGplayer’s 8,000+ packs plus two independent counts (Coded Yellow, DigitalTQ) in close agreement on every tier. The darker bar is the low end of the range and the lighter bar runs to the high end. Odds for a single card assume every card of its rarity is equally likely.

What makes Obsidian Flames different
Obsidian Flames is the third main expansion of the Scarlet & Violet era, and its Japanese counterpart, Ruler of the Black Flame, reached shelves in Japan on 28 July 2023. The English list holds 230 cards: 197 in the main set and 33 secret rares numbered from #198 to #230.
Its centrepiece is Charizard ex as a Tera Pokémon whose type changed to Darkness, a sharp break from the Fire type collectors expect. Other Tera Pokémon ex switch types as well, a Lightning-type Tyranitar ex among them, while Revavroom ex made its debut here.
Past #197 sit a dozen Illustration Rares and a dozen Ultra Rares, then six Special Illustration Rares and three gold Hyper Rares at the very end. The Special Illustration Rares are Eiscue ex, Charizard ex, Revavroom ex, Pidgeot ex, Geeta and Poppy, and the gold cards are Charizard ex, Artazon and a Basic Fire Energy.
Obsidian Flames products and release dates
English shelves got the set on 11 August 2023, with single booster packs, a 6-pack Booster Bundle, a 36-pack Booster Box, an Elite Trainer Box and a Build & Battle Box, which paired 4 packs with a ready-to-play 40-card deck holding one of four foil promos.
The shop Elite Trainer Box carried 9 packs. Pokémon Center sold its own version with 11 packs and two full-art Charmander promos, one bearing the Pokémon Center logo, along with 65 Charmander sleeves and a code card for Pokémon TCG Live.
To see which of these boxes gives the best shot at a Charizard ex, run them through the pull rate calculator. For future Pokémon Center exclusives, our drop alerts send word as soon as one appears.
Obsidian Flames questions
What is the most valuable card in Obsidian Flames?
Charizard ex, the Special Illustration Rare numbered #223, leads the value ranking above. Prices refresh each day from TCGplayer, so the cards beneath it can trade places.
How many cards are in Obsidian Flames?
230 in total: the 197 cards of the main set plus 33 secret rares that carry numbers above the set total, ending at #230.
When did Obsidian Flames come out?
11 August 2023 in English. Paldea Evolved came before it in June 2023, and Pokémon 151 followed in September 2023.
What are the Obsidian Flames pull rates?
Expect a Special Illustration Rare roughly every 27 to 32 packs, which makes a specific one of the six about a 1 in 162 to 192 pull. Gold Hyper Rares turn up around every 50 to 52 packs, and an Illustration Rare lands in roughly one pack of every 12 to 14. These figures rest on TCGplayer's sample of more than 8,000 packs.
Why is Charizard ex a Darkness type in Obsidian Flames?
It is a Tera Pokémon. Terastallization in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet lets a Pokémon change type, and this Charizard ex appears as a Darkness-type Tera form.
What came in the Pokémon Center Obsidian Flames ETB?
Eleven booster packs, two more than the shop box, plus a pair of full-art Charmander promos, one stamped with the Pokémon Center logo.
